VDK Leave No Trace Policy
These principles continue efforts to reduce human impact on nature. We appreciate your efforts to protect our environment!
PLAN AHEAD & PREPARE
Poor advance preparation can cause damage to the environment. Planning and preparation practices reduce environmental impact and improve safety in outdoor areas.
TRAVEL ON DURABLE SURFACES
Only use established trails. One careless step can cause a trend of impact. Responsible route etiquette protects sensitive ecosystems and prevents trail degradation.
CORRECT DISPOSAL OF WASTE
Improper disposal of food, trash, urine, faeces, and wastewater not only aid the spread of disease but also changes the habits of wildlife and spoils the scenery. Do not leave behind banana, orange, or apple peels/cores/pips. Take all garbage home with you, including hygiene products. Practice responsible pack-in/pack-out etiquette at all times.
LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND
Removing or altering natural or historic items harms wildlife, scenery, and cultural values. Do not collect natural items or move them. Leave rocks, plants, and other natural objects as you find them. Be aware of local invasives and prevent their spread through transportation. Help preserve historical or cultural sites.
MINIMISE CAMPFIRE IMPACT
Fires can cause lasting impacts to the wilderness. Do not light a fire. When engaging in multi-day hikes/camps please use a lightweight stove for cooking.
RESPECT WILDLIFE
When wildlife obtain human food, or humans approach them too closely, they may lose their wild habits, spread disease, and become nuisances or safety hazards. Never feed animals and keep food and garbage where animals can't reach it. Watch animals from a safe distance and minimise your sound and general presence. Avoid wildlife during sensitive times. Use proper food storage procedures.
BE CONSIDERATE
Hike your own trail but remember that inconsiderate behaviour detracts from the experience for others. Use the right of way rules. Use quiet voices and be respectful with the use of electronics, music, and drones. Offer mutual respect on shared trails and destinations. Preserve the past when examining & photographing by not touching cultural or historic structures and artifacts.
