A Guide to How Long It Takes to Hike Lion's Head in Cape Town
There's a reason Lion's Head is one of Cape Town's most popular hikes. It's relatively short, accessible to most people with a reasonable level of fitness and delivers some of the best panoramic views in South Africa. But while the distance isn't particularly long, the experience is one you'll want to savour rather than rush.
How Long Does a Lion’s Head Hike Take?
If you're planning to hike Lion's Head in Cape Town, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is "How long does the hike take?"
The short answer:
- Average round-trip: 3 to 4 hours
- Fast hikers: Around 1,5 to 2 hours
- Most visitors: 3 hours
Your hiking time depends on much more than your fitness level. The weather, crowds, time of day, and how often you stop to admire the views all make a difference. And the mountain has many ways of encouraging you to slow down.
If this is your first mountain hike, allow 3 to 4 hours return. There's absolutely no need to rush. One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is trying to keep pace with experienced hikers. Lion's Head rewards a measured approach. Every few minutes the view changes, revealing another spectacular perspective of the City Bowl, Atlantic Ocean, Twelve Apostles, Table Mountain and Camps Bay. Taking regular breaks makes the hike more enjoyable than pushing for speed.

When Is the Trail Busiest?
The average hike duration can increase considerably during busy periods. Delays can be expected during:
- Summer sunrise hikes
- Full moon evenings
- Weekends
- Public holidays
- December holidays
Queues occasionally form at the ladders and chains near the summit, adding anywhere from 10–30 minutes to your hike. If you'd prefer a quieter experience, consider hiking on a weekday shortly after sunrise.

Why Your Hiking Time May Be Different
A common misconception about Lion's Head is that it's a "quick hike." In reality, no two hikers are quite the same and the “quickness“ is relative.
Fitness Level: Someone who hikes regularly may reach the summit in an hour. But if hiking isn't something you do, expect the climb to take around 2 to 3 hours – and that's perfectly normal. The trail climbs steadily almost from the moment you leave the parking area, so pacing yourself is far more important than speed.
Crowds: Lion's Head is Cape Town's busiest mountain. You'll often find yourself sharing the trail with dozens - or even hundreds - of other hikers. Near the summit, brief queues sometimes form where the route narrows around the ladders and staples. These delays can easily add another 10 or 20 minutes to your hike.
Photo Stops: This is one of the biggest factors. As hiking guides, we've noticed that first-time visitors almost always spend longer on the mountain than they expect – not because they're tired, but because they simply can't stop taking photographs. Views as far as False Bay is not unusual, and if you arrive just before sunrise, you'll often watch the first light reach Devil's Peak before it hits the City Bowl below. Table Mountain dominates the skyline, and Camps Bay, Clifton, and Sea Point seem to unfold beneath your feet. It's difficult to resist stopping.
The Descent: One of the biggest surprises for first-time hikers is that the descent often takes nearly as long as the climb. The uneven sandstone steps, loose gravel, and waiting for other hikers on narrower sections mean you'll naturally move more carefully coming down.
Is Lion's Head a Difficult Trail?
Lion's Head is generally considered a moderate hike, and most reasonably active people complete the trail comfortably with a few rest stops. While the trail isn't especially long, it gains around 340 metres of elevation over approximately 5 kilometres return. The biggest challenge isn't the distance; it's the steady climb. During the final section the trail becomes steeper and more hands-on. Hikers can choose between ladders, chains and staples that help negotiate the steeper rocks, or an alternative route that skips a few ladders while remaining steep and rocky. Neither route requires specialist climbing experience, but both deserve respect, especially in wet or windy weather.

Can Beginners Hike Lion's Head?
For sure! Every year, thousands of people hike Lion's Head without previous mountain hiking experience. The key isn’t exceptionally fitness; it's taking your time. Walking at a steady pace, taking water breaks, and enjoying the journey will make the hike far more meaningful than trying to reach the summit as quickly as possible. First-time hikers are often pleasantly surprised by what they're capable of.
How Long Does a Sunrise Hike Take?
If you're hiking for a sunrise, allow 75 to 90 minutes to reach the summit. Walking in the dark naturally slows your pace, and you'll want enough time to settle on the summit before the first light appears over the mountains to the east. One of the things we always tell our guests is that sunrise doesn't begin when the sun appears above the horizon. Some of the most beautiful colours arrive about 30 minutes beforehand, when the sky gradually changes from deep blue to soft orange and pink. Arriving early means you experience the entire show, rather than just the final few minutes.
How Long Should You Spend at the Summit?
Although some suggest spending ten or fifteen minutes at the top, we'd recommend allowing at least half an hour if the weather is clear. There are few places in Cape Town where you can enjoy uninterrupted 360-degree views. You'll see Table Mountain from an angle that many visitors never experience, watch paragliders launching from Signal Hill, and, on exceptionally clear days, spot mountains far beyond False Bay. It's the kind of place where the time is forgotten.
What Should You Take With You?
Even though Lion's Head isn't a full-day hike, it's still a mountain environment. Avoid hiking in flip-flops or dress-shoes and carrying more than you need. A light backpack makes the climb noticeably more comfortable. We recommend bringing along:
- At least one litre of water per person
- Comfortable shoes with good grip
- A lightweight jacket, even in summer
- Sunscreen and a hat
- A fully charged phone
- A headlamp or torch for sunrise or sunset hikes
- A small snack for the summit
Can You Hike Lion's Head Without a Guide?
The route is generally straightforward, but many visitors choose a local guide for several reasons:
- avoiding navigation mistakes in the dark
- learning about Cape Town's history and natural environment
- hiking at a guided pace
- receiving guidance through the rocky summit section
- enjoying a safer experience, particularly at sunrise or sunset
- a guide also allows you to focus less on finding the trail and more on taking in the scenery.

Final Thoughts
For most people, allowing 3 hours to fully enjoy Lion's Head is sufficient. While it's possible to complete the hike in a rush, it misses the point in my opinion. The trail isn't only about reaching the summit; it's about experiencing one of Cape Town's most iconic sites. Lion's Head trail, with Table Mountain right beside you, is a hike that is best at an enjoyable pace.
